Cuc Phuong National Park: Vietnam’s first national park, with primary limestone forest and many ancient trees. It lies about 55–60 km (1–1.5 hours by car) from central Ninh Binh; the butterfly season runs from about late April to May. Allow about 3–4 hours.
Van Long: A wetland nature reserve, Vietnam’s 9th Ramsar site and home to the endemic Delacour’s langur. Visitors travel by hand-rowed boat (2 guests per boat); lotus blooms in May–June. It lies about 18 km north of Hoa Lu. Allow about 2 hours.
